Show Information: Based on a story in The Weekly World News, BAT BOY: THE MUSICAL is a musical comedy/horror show about a half boy/half bat creature who is discovered in a cave near Hope Falls, West Virginia. For lack of a better solution, the local sheriff brings Bat Boy to the home of the town veterinarian, Dr. Parker, where he is eventually accepted as a member of the family and taught to act like a “normal” boy by the veterinarian’s wife, Meredith, and teenage daughter, Shelley. Bat Boy is happy with his new life, but he naively tries to fit in with the narrow-minded people of Hope Falls and a chain of events is set in motion that will reveal the shocking story of Bat Boy’s unholy origin. With a beat-driven rock score that pays homage to the rock musicals of the late ‘60s and early ‘70s, Bat Boy provides a compelling theatrical metaphor for the dangers of prejudice, intolerance, and provincialism.

Character Information Bat Boy (Edgar) - Plays Late Teens - Early 20s (Tenor) Edgar is half boy/half bat and his journey from a primitive/unrefined being to a well-rounded and civilized human (and the difficulties he encounters along the way) is the heart of our story. "Bat Boy" is very raw and unsophisticated at the beginning of the play (after all, he has lived in a cave his entire life and never been exposed to civilization) and can't even speak. However, with the Parker's help, he grows into "Edgar" (the name lovingly given to him by Meredith) – an intelligent and enthusiastic individual with a strong desire to be accepted and to fit in. Lead. Dr. Thomas Parker – Plays 30's - 50's (Tenor/Baritone) The town veterinarian, Dr. Parker is asked to "take care" of the creature but is convinced to spare his life by his wife and daughter. He is a desperate man in a loveless marriage. As he sees the attachment growing between Bat Boy and Meredith, Dr. Parker grows to secretly despise the boy. Supporting Lead. Meredith Parker – Plays 30's - 50's (Mezzo) Dr. Parker's wife, Shelley's mother. Meredith seems to be the epitome of the “perfect” housewife, but she is much more independent than we realize. She helps convince her husband to keep Bat Boy. She picks out a name for him, teaches him manners, and educates him; she does everything that the mother he never had would do – but in the process, a deeply kept secret is disturbed and her world starts to crumble around her. Supporting Lead. Shelley Parker – Plays Late Teens – Early 20's (Soprano) The Parker's rebellious daughter. Shelley and her mother convince her father to spare Bat Boy. Shelley transforms from a spoiled brat who taunts Bat Boy into a young woman who falls in love with him and protects him from the town's wrath. Supporting Lead. Sheriff Reynolds – Plays 30-60 (Baritone) The Sheriff brings Bat Boy to Dr. Parker's house to be "taken care of". He is called upon by the town folks to deal with the situation whenever the situation goes awry. He is always the mediator and tries to do the right thing ... as long as it’s good for his career! Featured solo. *Note* The rest of these characters will double as ensemble or other featured roles. Rick Taylor – Plays Late Teens – Early 20's (Tenor) One of the adventurous siblings who discovers Bat Boy in a cave. A bully and Shelly's boyfriend. Featured solo. Ron Taylor – Plays Teen-age One of the adventurous siblings who discovers Bat Boy in a cave. Ruthie Taylor – Plays Teen-age One of the adventurous siblings who discovers Bat Boy in a cave. Is the first one to be attacked by “Bat boy”. Mrs. Taylor – Plays 40's - 50's (Alto) Mother of Rick, Ron, Ruthie. Often seen as close minded and bigoted. Mrs. Taylor prioritizes her children’s safety above as else… possibly causing them harm in the process. Featured solo. Reverend Billy Hightower – Plays 30-60 (Tenor) The Reverend is a classic example of a Baptist, Evangelical Southern religious figure. Although an out-of-towner, he has a large featured solo that opens Act 2 and is essential helping the townsfolk through their irreverence for change. Pan – Plays any age (Tenor) A forest god who sings "Children, Children" and presides over an interpretive marriage ceremony for Shelley and Bat Boy. Must be a strong singer. Ensemble (Townsfolk, Animals, Voices) Simple and superstitious, the townspeople seem unwilling to change, but are really just ignorant to different ways of thinking – Most ensemble members have solo speaking and singing lines and all have lots of opportunities to shine. In addition to playing the townsfolk, the ensemble members also play animals in the forest scene ("Children, Children"), the voices in Dr. Parkers head, and featured dancing tracks. Actors playing these roles must be strong singers and good actors and movers. Various featured roles as follows: Lorraine- A rancher’s wife Maggie- Senior Representative, Hope Falls Town Council Daisy- A schoolteacher Mr. Dillon- A rancher Bud- A rancher Ned- A rancher Roy- A townsman Clem- A townsman Various Animals Young Meredith Young Dr. Parker Meredith's Father Meredith's Mother A Doctor Institute Man
